Growing up in an extended family of 11 taught Alan a thing or two about getting along with others. Enjoying an idyllic Kiwi childhood in a very different Herne Bay to the one we know today, Alan and his siblings made the most of the natural inner city coastal suburb, eeling in the creeks and only turning up at home when they needed feeding. Alan’s family home measured just 90sqm, so it was understandable the kids sought their fun outside! That was some years ago, before the developers moved in and turned the popular Auckland suburb into something vastly different. But it was during these childhood years Alan’s father, Bernard, taught him some valuable lessons that would stick with him throughout his life.
